This is Wirral LA21 Network's new gardens in schools project.
The idea of DIG is to work with pupils and teachers to set up gardens in school grounds to suit their needs and wishes. The two year garden club follow-up sessions will help children to learn about plants and growing. Hopefully it will encourage them to try a few more vegetables in their diet.
The teachers will be able to develop links between the gardens and the national curriculum and hopefully develop links in the wider school community.
The project is funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and it has enabled Wirral LA21 Network to work with 11 local schools. The work we will do includes:
• erection of polytunnels for all year round production dig

• building raised beds for growing vegetables
• creation of wildlife and wild flower areas
• redevelopment of roadside areas to enhance the local environment
• working towards educational awards
• linking to healthy eating schemes
• recycling and eco-club creation
• linking with like-minded schools, groups and individuals
Wirral LA21 Network would like to see this form the basis for a Wirral Gardens For Life objective. We would also like it to become one of the key players involved in helping schools, organisations and all Wirral people to realise the importance of looking after our small corner of the world for future generations.
Gardens in Schools participants might like to register with Year of Food and Farming www.yearoffoodandfarming.org.uk. This site offers resources for schools.
