TOP OF THE PLOTS Tots Plots Scoops Prestigious Awards |
|
| Tots Plots has recently received recognition for its pioneering work. At the Groundwork Merseyside 21 Awards 2003, it collected two awards and was nominated for a third. The prestigious event took place at Liverpools Holiday Inn Hotel on 6th February 2003. Representing WGA were Brian Parry (Trustee), Phil McHoul (Information Officer), and Katrina Wu (Administrator). It was compered by Radio Merseysides Alan Jackson. Tots Plots was winner in the Pauline Mousdell Changing Lives Award and runner up in the Merseyside Health Action Zone Sustainable Health Award. It was also nominated for the Community Project of the Year Award. Wirrals Lady Mayor Pat Williams later borrowed the trophy and certificates for a civic function. Wirral LA21 Forum was also awarded a certificate for its Give And Take Day event. This took the awards total to three for the WGA office.
News from the Plots: Spring is definitely here and seedlings are sprouting in the office. These will soon be moved to the polytunnel in the newly formed Manor Community Garden. Four new groups are now on board the Tots Plots Project. These are St Anne's RC Primary in Rock Ferry (in partnership with Sure Start Ferries), Barnston Primary, Bambi Playgroup, and South Wallasey Neighbourhood College Creche. This takes the total to fourteen schools and groups on Wirral with a Tots Plot. New Wallasey Community Action Fund has donated £750 towards tools for the project. Sure Start Ferries have also match funded the costs for materials at St Anne's School. Thanks are also due to the New Opportunities Fund / SEED Programme who are our major funders for another year. If you would like to volunteer to work on either Tots Plots or the new Community Training Allotment then please contact the camera shy Jeff Hughes on 0151 639 2121 or email him on jeff@cesul.org.uk We also require any herbs or herbaceous plants which you might have available. Watch out for a new Tots Plots web page too. For the time being you can still see the current one at www.cesul.org.uk/totsplots2002.htm

UN Warns of Future Water Crisis
|
The world's water crisis is so
severe it could take almost 30 years to eradicate hunger, the United Nations says.
|
THE WATER STRUGGLE :
It says another 45m hectares (111 million acres) will be under irrigation by 2030,
requiring an increase of 14% in water used in this way. Irrigation already accounts for
about 70% of global water use. |
Golden future The report says almost 60% of the water used in irrigation is wasted. But average grain yields doubled between 1962 and 1996. It says: "Towards 2050, the world could enjoy access to food for all. The fact that 815m are presently ravaged by chronic undernourishment is not due to a lack of capacity to produce the required food. It is because of global and national social, economic and political contexts that permit, and sometimes cause, unacceptable levels of poverty to perpetuate."
